For the most part I
have stayed in the local area. After graduation, I continued working at
S&S Cafeteria until October of 1980, then I went to work for my dad at a
buffet he owned in Deland. While working for the cafeteria and then
my dad, I attended DBCC. Not really sure what I wanted to do, but I knew
I did not want to continue to work in a restaurant. In June of 1981, I
applied at the new prison that was opening in Daytona Beach, Tomoka
Correctional Institution. The benefits looked great, insurance and high
risk retirement. I was hired June 5, 1981 and began my certification
training at DBCC on June 8, 1981. The prison received it's
first inmates on July 8, 1981. Sadly, over the years there were a
couple of people I/we had attended school with that ended up on the wrong
side of the fence. I saw some of them come and go several times. I
will not mention their names, no need to possibly embarrass anyone. I
moved to Deland in August of 1989 and still live there now.
I was married in 1984
and was blessed with a son (Christopher) in 1985, a daughter (Amanda) in 1989
and another daughter (Brittney) in 1992. Christopher now works at the
prison and has been there for four years as of September 2008.
Amanda is currently attending DBCC (Daytona State College) studying
nursing and Brittney is a junior at Deland High School.
She plays the flute in the band. I retired from the prison in
February of 2007 after almost 26 years, I had had enough. I am
currently working at Florida Health Care Plans in Orange City as a
security guard. I work Monday - Friday, 6am - 2pm, no weekends, no
holidays, no stress and no BS. A very big change from what I was used
too.
I attended the 10 and
20 year class reunions and the cruise. I did not attend the 30 year
reunion and have regretted not attending it ever since. I will not miss
another one.
Best of luck to all,
Terry Applegate
