’77 Hawk Profile

Hi Everybody! It is so hard to believe that it has
been 30 years already!
I moved to Daytona
Beach from Melbourne when I
was 12. I went to Seabreeze Jr. High and then Seabreeze High
School for a
year and then I became a Hawk at the Crick (as everyone referred to it) like
the rest of you. I wasn't too sure about Spruce Creek at first because it was
out in the middle of nowhere and it looked like a mental institution!
Seabreeze was so open, right across from the beach, and right next to
McDonalds. What more could you ask for?! After a very short time at the new
school, it grew on me and I realized that we were going to be a part of
something special because we got to name the school, the mascot, and just about
everything else that would eventually be associated with the school. Not very
many people get that chance!
After high school, I went to the University of Florida for a
couple of years. During Spring Break in 1978, I was on the beach in Daytona
getting a tan next to my 1969 Mustang convertible when an old high school
boyfriend, Roy "Mike" Stephens, stopped to say "hi".
(Mike graduated from Seabreeze High
School in 1975.
Many of you knew him as Roy in high
school but after he graduated he decided to go by his middle name. He always
tells everybody that knew him then that "Roy
moved"!) We started dating again and on September 1,1979 we were
married. After 27 wonderful years of marriage we have been blessed with 3
sons- Drew 24 years old- Todd 22 - and Chad 20. Our son Drew has blessed us
with 3 beautiful granddaughters- Kaley 5 years old- Sierra 2- and MacKenzie
1. It is so much fun being grandparents!!!
20 years ago, my grandpa passed away and he and
my grandma were living in the house that I grew up in until we moved
to Daytona when I was 12. My grandma asked us if we were interested in moving
back to Melbourne because
the house was too large for her to live in by herself and it is on 2 acres of land
which was more than she could handle. We were living in Port
Orange in the Hamlet Subdivision
just down the street from Spruce Creek HS. Mike worked for FEC railway in New
Smyrna for 9 years but he had just gotten a job at Kennedy Space Center working
for their railroad at NASA. We decided to make the move and our sons got to
grow up in the house that I grew up in (my parents built the house and moved
into it when I was 6 months old). We love Melbourne because
it isn't nearly as tourist oriented as Daytona is and we are still only a few
minutes from the beach.
I went into banking after going to U of F. Then I
decided to become a stay at home Mom until our youngest son was 3. At that
point, I decided to start my own business that I could work around my busy schedule
of volunteering as an Apple Corps volunteer at our sons school, Cub Scout Den
Leader, team Mom for soccer and Little League, etc. I decided to start my own
pet-sitting service on a wing and a prayer. I named it Critter Care Pet Sitting
Service. 17 years later, it is the #1 pet sitting service
in South Brevard! I love
animals and working with them. We have had numerous pets over the years
including cats, dogs, birds, fish, iguanas, snakes (only because I had boys!),
rabbits, ducks, and a pig named Wilbur. Our current pets include 4 dogs, 2
cats, numerous fish, and an umbrella cockatoo named Barretta
(he says "Go Gators" and "Love Gators"!), and a squirrel
that I raised from a baby.
We are avid Gator fans. In fact recently, we were
voted "Brevard’s Biggest Gator Fans" in a poll in the Florida
Today Newspaper (the picture is from the article). We spend almost every
weekend in the fall going to Gator games in our motorhome.
This has definitely been our year! Three back to back National Championships!
Go Gators!!
We can't wait to see everyone in July!
